The More Peace Less AIDS Campaign Visits Costa Rica

Argentina – Nova Agency – March 3rd, 2009

Patricia Pérez, the regional secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean of the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (ICW LATINA) will visit Costa Rica to mark International Women’s Day. She will be welcomed on March 6th at the Presidential House in San José by the President and Nobel Peace Prize Winner (1987) Oscar Arias to launch the global campaign “Peace as an Opportunity to Overcome AIDS” in which she coordinates and already put into action in Kenya, Honduras and Nicaragua in 2007.

Pérez will speak about the campaign to legislators and leaders of Costa Rica alongside the Vice President Laura Chinchilla, the national legislator Ana Elena Chacón, the Vice-Minister of Health, Lidieth Carbello and the co-chair of CONCASIDA2009, Ruth Linares from ICW Costa Rica.

Pérez’ itinerary includes meetings with national leaders and female members of the local ICW. Speaking about her work, she affirms that: “This global campaign that ICW is launching is to sensitize social actors, politicians, business and cultural leaders as well as any individuals from other sectors to construct a social response to the disease so as to prevent AIDS from continuing its deadly spread around the world, most often affecting women, kids and teenagers from Africa and Central America”.

She added: “It is so important that President Oscar Arias from Costa Rica leads this initiative and for this, I am so grateful on behalf of all women living with HIV in the world and especially for those from Latin America”.  (NOVA Agency)
