Roundtable on Peace and Justice

“How can we speak of justice with so many inequalities in the access to services?”
Dr. Ana Isabel Nieto-Coordinator for the National Program on STD/HIV/AIDS for El Salvador.

The regional forum on “Keys for the Development of Women’s Leadership in Latin America” was jointly organized by the More Peace Less AIDS Foundation and ICW Latina in Panama. With over 70 participants from 22 Latin American countries, issues were discussed such as peace and justice.

Participated: Dr. Virginia Simari- President of the Women’s Judges Association of Argentina, M.A. Ana Matilde Gómez- Ex General Attorney for Panama, Dr. Ana Isabel Nieto- Coordinator for the National Program on STD/HIV/AIDS for El Salvador and Ruth Linares from ICW Costa Rica.

Reflective comments were made by the rapporteurs and they spoke of the importance of meeting and discussing the main political and intellectual points.

Dr. Simari stated that “the legal norms are not sufficient and that gender non-discrimination should be assured”.  “Peace and justice go hand in hand for a dignified development of the people” commented Mrs. Gómez while Dr. Nieto asked a question to the audience: “How can we speak of justice with so many inequalities in the access to services?” Ruth Linares proposed that: “One cannot only occupy a physical space, but should do so by trying to generate profound changes”.

It was a successful debate which encouraged us to continue this path in a future meeting that we are already planning for.
